Celebrating Music Extraordinarily with SPICMACAY and Ruchira Kedar

World Music Day!!!

Not long ago was I introduced to music, it was just the same day as I was born!

There is enough and more music in our surroundings, if only we make less noise and spread calm!

As I moved forward in the journey of my life, one blessed day I was introduced to SPICMACAY, a mobile temple of faith, grace, music, dance, art and some mystic aspects of life that each of us our born with, but slowly forget to practice them due to known and unknown reasons!

Today on the occasion of World Music Day, a lot of people in the world will do the talking about legends (living or dead) and their legacies. And I will follow the cue, but with a person who has the knack of creating mesmeric waves and legacy in way that is too close to her listeners' heart.  And before I introduce you to her, I whole-heartedly thank SPICMACAY, the temple to have introduced me to a divine like this.

Ruchira Kedar, a singer, a musician(her hums are the instrument she plays), a sincere human, a guru that one can never find easily... That's what she is to me (no exaggerations made… no questions to answer)!

It was during the Rural Workshops for Hindustani Classical Music, that I as a part of SPICMACAY was introduced to Ruchira Ji. My first encounter with her was in the train, where we both, with a few accompanists and another friend travelled to the villages of Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh!
She was plain, nothing of what one feels after seeing a renowned artist(no jitters), probably because she is more than that!

Unfolding the "many" of my celebrity!

During the 7 days stay with her, I closely got to know what it takes to be a classical singer (how it is not all that easy and glamorous as it looks and sounds to most people of another profession). It takes 'saadhna'(meditative learning), determination, time keeping, proper food, and keeping oneself entertained (in good measures) that makes a performer. Now what about a performer along with being a guru, a team player, a social worker (she's all that!)

Some true "guru" moments that I had with her

The sessions in the Rural School Intensives (RSI) were programmed as a mix of a performance followed by a workshop or vice versa. Ruchira ji would first take the children to a musical journey with her divine voice to a world of Bhajans, where she would ask all the children to close their eyes(all the ways and means of instructing the children subtly flowed in) and listen, after that she would teach the children the basics of SaReGaMa, Alankaar, Aaroh, Avroh! And while she did all this teaching there never appeared a single trace of a Hindi-Telugu linguistic conflict! Music is THE language of hearts!
End of every workshop, the most beautiful lines that she would say: "Mazaa aaya na?" And the children would nod in acceptance, then continuing the dialogue she'd say: "This is what music does to you, it brings you happiness". One simple line, but not understood my so many of us in this world!!

Then in the closure of the entire program with the school, she would give the children a homework (knowing that we would not comeback to check if they did the homework). And guess what the home work could have been; it was singing SaReGaMa for five minutes every day while they walked or cycled their way to the school(one of the most beautiful ways of teaching, tell the student what to do and have faith...instead of not telling them at all)

I can go on writing about this beautiful lady who turned from a celebrity Ruchira Ji to a sisterly figure Ruchira Di to me in just days! She is synonymous to music to me and the number of teary-eyed moments (due to the ecstasy of reaching another world) that I have had while she sang some immortal bhajans during those 7days, make her my most sort after celebrity in the field of music for the rest of my life!

While she practises music. I practised alchemy through her and everything around turned into gold!

Being Single at Goa... Beaches and a little more!

Tale 2: A Tale of two beaches!

Just as we reached the Baga Beach(North Goa) after much struggle and adventure on the roads...the revelry, the everlasting celebration on the beach, the people moving around in utmost laze like there is no tomorrow and everything in the air helped us release our stress almost immediately. All of us were glad that we reached the place that we had been desiring to be at, for almost a fortnight!
The place just spelt GOA...in its ways, in the food, in every single grain of sand that we stepped on. We decided to come back again to soak ourselves in a better relaxed form, unlike our first encounter with Baga.

The next evening we were a confident bunch with the roads and the place, as if we lived there for months now... Hah! over-confidence is something that suits girls ;) and all seven of us displayed it royally! Reaching the beach much before dusk gave us the chance to see the scene set at the beach from the very beginning. There were a string of boats like a traditional beach would have; then, there were a host of several small restaurant like eat-outs, some of them extended their reach till almost the shore, with beautifully laid out tables and easy chairs of very short height just enough to squat; the show stealer was the candle-light arrangement(a lit-up candle covered with the glass of a lantern)...exotic and definitely romantic!
We ate at Britto's. I must make a mention that Goa has a taste of finesse and everything about it is outright aesthetic! Even the Menu card had a Mario Miranda sketch on it! Cheers to that effort!

Just as we moved on to the beach there were cute little girls with woolen strings in their hands, trying to make a deal for a special "hair strand beading"... a pretty innovation for fashion and fun loving girls;our Neet-Geet duo gave-in to this temptation and prettier they looked.
Don't you miss it!

If you have not planned what all you wish to do at Goa, you are us! :)
Just walk till the shore, lie down and soak! Its a bliss! That was Baga in short for you!

The last day of the super short trip to Goa, was as uncertain as any other! The girls had the GPS handy, but we wanted some undirected pleasure and that lead us to the less explored Carmona Beach(South Goa). We thanked our gods, stars and everything for bringing to this serenity that Carmona filled in us! The beach had only ten people in total, of which we were seven... now you know what I mean! Bliss.
The mid-day sun didn't make us feel one bit upset about being out, that was the magic going on inside each of us. The firm yet mild strokes of the waves, pushed us several meters away from the point where we stood, it felt dramatic and unbelievable; so all of us repeated this exercise and interestingly all of us were pushed back again and again and we didn't stop like little children!

This fantasy land etched itself in my memory with a few more add-ons truly ecstatic in experience. The beach hosted a small little eat-out(the only one) named "Shack by the bay", with a few Firangs sitting and enjoying their lemonade and listening to my favourite song..."Humein tumse pyaar kitna ye hum nahi jaante" in the instrumental version, played on a Hawaiian Guitar...At once life just seemed perfect! And these are the moments we live for. I also remember saying it to Geet, that if I ever wanna die, it would be in this state of mind... absolute!
This beach was it!!! It gave us enough and more motivation to all of us to come back to Goa to explore the less explored, something that the commercial beaches at North Goa couldn't do to us!

True it is... There is something for everyone in this world, you just need to make a little effort and have a lot of willingness to know "what you want". We want South Goa, a few more serene beaches, leisure moments and memories that can help us through the working days and not feel worked up about it!

Truly loved holidaying at Goa.

Being Single at Goa... an experience full of life and learning

Goa.
The world knows it for joy, freedom of being, travelling and an absolute carefree attitude!
But ask anyone who has been there for a short or a long trip, he will have a tale of his own to tell, beyond these.
Here is mine.

Seven Single Girls
Six Mocktails(+ One shot of Fenny)
Five Beaches to explore
Four Days
Three I-Phones(Apple I-phones)
Two means of transport(a Wagon-R and a Honda Dio)
One Mission: Go Crrrrraaaazy and DO Crazy!

Just like the abstract that I created with the numbers above, so was this trip to Goa (organised by the Being Single Club)... a total "abstract" and that I believe was the USP of the trip, right from the journey to the destination to every single bit of experience. Some tiny glimpses of how Goa exhilarated us.

First Tale:
This definitely was not our first experience of the trip, but I just can't get over it and had to mention it in the first tale. It is about how we managed our trip inside of Goa(after Kesineni Travels' A/C Bus left us). We were put up in the Mahindra Resort Club in South of Goa, Varca Beach and given that, all the known and recommended beaches were located in the North of Goa, we needed an immediate transport arrangement for ourselves. Considering the budget, feasibility of drivers/riders, fun and adventure all put together, we decided to hire a Car and a Bike and began our journey inside of Goa... straight from the South to the North! To help us guide through the route, we resorted to the GPS/Google Maps on the I-phones of 2 of our dear friends sitting in the car and the bike rider followed the car.
The actual distance for us to be travelled was about 60 kilometers, but thanks to the phone batteries getting conked off one after the other, we lost GPS and the only thing to depend on were Milestones, Landmarks and Traffic Police. We were a little more than skeptical to ask a way out to people on roads(considering trouble that could come in). Due to this frenzy and uncalled for "loss of GPS" we travelled a 40 kilometers extra, digging into new roads, taking lefts and rights(with small misses).
After the exciting drive/ride we reached the Baga Beach on the first day and realised that it was 9 pm already . Now picture this...Seven Girls, all by themselves on a beach(a crowded one though), starving for food and still not sure when to head back to their den, in a semi-decision making mode amidst all this we still managed to take a few group photos(which didn't exhibit any emotions of our mind on our face).
Some of us then enquired at the Britto's Restaurant(which was located on the beach) about how long the beach can let us be and how safe it is to be there. They told us that we can stay over till 5 in the morning, but somehow not everyone was convinced with the fact of staying over.
What worried us more was the night ride back home attributing to no GPS, very scanty public on the roads and how could we forget... all of us Women!!! It was a perfect Catch-22 situation. But the final decision was quickly made and Neetu delared that we were not going to stay at the beach.
The adventure ride began. It started as a joy ride, as we took to the highway and we were filled with confidence to trek our way back, but it was not more than 15 kilometers that we began feeling the thrill with the roads getting narrower and almost every church that we had for our landmark started looking similar; we soon, near Margao realised that we were lost and a quick adrenaline rush defined my state of mind and body, which no water sport or bungee could beat. There were roads trying to mislead us in all its mysteriousness, and in more than one instance we were caught in the middle of no man's land, just the seven of us. We didn't know whether to feel happy about the courage that we had or to feel terrified; all our feelings were mixed(more mixed than a mixed fruit jam).

Haunts and freak out moments:
If you've watched this movie Talaash, you would know what I am going to talk now. There's this place where Kareena Kapoor asks Amir Khan to meet her, a very hidden and untouched kind of beach? So, in our great adventure to search the right road we ended up on a turning near the Benaulim Church which absolutely resembled our filmy haunted location. What freaked us out even more was the on the face reality that we were just a few hundred meters away from running our bike inside the water owing to very low-lighting. We didn't drown and were on our feet real quick. A little later we were also offered help by a few men to show us the directions taxing our minds for refusal even more. When the breeze got better and the feeling of having survived a drown and a few possibly lecherous men, the victorious mind asked for a quick rest from the fatigue and I gave in to a very short(fraction of seconds)nap while riding the bike. Adventure again, I skid near a road divider, just a few inches away from ramming into the divider(Chanting Ram... ensured no Ramming) ;)! Me and Geet were again back on track and this time she made all the efforts to keep me awake by telling stories of all kinds :)

The last thrill was one near the Varca Church cross roads, we lost the road to our resort almost 3 times on the same day, whirl winding at 1 am, freaking our tired minds all the more. After all the excitement, frustration and exhilaration(all in the same order), we reached our stay put with the help of few family cars that were passing by and thanked god for keeping us safe in all the forms that we should.

Learnings and more learnings

So while this happened I learnt so much and I thought I should tell you about my learnings too.

  • Women are at their strongest best when not with men.
  • When you know that I-phones are so useful, have it charged fully especially when you know that you have to bank on it. Better still have a fully charged spare battery during travels.
  • Be a quick decision maker.
  • Respect the decision of the leader. Discuss in case of disagreement, but do not waste time.
  • When lost, maintain calm. All of us did. It was wonderful to see 7 women quiet and composed, none in the blaming mode.
  • Stay together. We all have gut instincts, but stay on the same page. Either all of us land in trouble or none.
  • When scared, sing a song. Enjoy the breeze! It works in boosting positive energy.
  • All girls must learn to ride a bike.
  • When in Goa. Enjoy every bit! :)
Kudos to an amazing bunch at Being Single!
Watch out for the next tale from the same trip with a new set of learnings... until then Practise Travelling!
